So, I finally succumbed to the temptation. I’d like to say that I fought valiantly, and staved off the desires for a new phone, but I didn’t. Despite all the arguments that I made in favor of not getting a new phone, when the phone contract came up for renewal, I succumbed.
I’ve talked before about why I lusted a Crackberry (nee Blackberry). I love the Crackberry form factor, and the fact that it has a hardware keyboard makes me happy. But I didn’t get a Crackberry. Not even the allure of the new Crackberry storm from Verizon could sway me. For the record, the big problem with the Storm for me was that it’s exclusively on Verizon, and Verizon uses CDMA technology. Verizon has a really bad reputation for customer service; almost as bad as Sprint.
I love the iPhone. I love all the neat applications and the form factor, functionality and design are my in opinion, second to none. I did not get an iPhone however. I hate AT&T as a carrier. I also can’t use the soft keyboard, my fingers are too big.
So, what did I get?
I went with the new kid on the block. I ordered a T-Mobile G1, aka the Google phone.
Why?
Well, it’s a smart phone, has a camera, has gps, has a hardware keyboard and bluetooth.
Was I in lust with it?
No.
Was I in love with this phone?
No.
Why did I get it then?
It intrigued me. I love Google, our new overlords, I keed, I keed. Maybe. Anyway, the phone intrigued me with its Android OS and all the open source goodness of it. I’ve twittered with a couple of people that have one, and they love their G1s. They said the OS was solid, there are now plenty of apps for the phone, most of which have the nice price of $0. I also like T-Mobile as a carrier and since they are GSM, I can use the phone just about anywhere on the planet.
Do I think this phone is better than the iPhone?
It’s too early to tell. I don’t own, nor have I ever owned an iPhone. I’ve used an iPhone plenty of times. Enough to know that I can’t live with it’s soft keyboard. I’ve dealt with AT&T enough to know that I don’t want to deal with them at all.
Time will tell me if I like the G1 more than I like my current rinky dink Blackberry 7290. I’ll keep you posted… from my new phone after it gets shipped to me in a couple of weeks
