On my drive home, I ponder what the price of gas will do the the will of the people to look for alternative sources of energy.  You have to wonder, if gas is cheap again, will people be shortsighted enough to ignore looking for fuel alternatives? Will we start to see sales of SUVs start to pick up again?

  1. The people’s “whim” may change on a daily basis, but they do make decisions that can’t be undone overnight. For example, buying a hybrid vehicle. The same thing holds true for alternative energy research/production. Higher prices have caused companies to commit to various projects that they can’t just abandon. Also, I don’t think anyone thinks that low gas prices will be permanent.

  2. I agree with you. I don’t think that anyone thinks that the lower prices are permanent, and even if they prove to last longer than anyone expects them to, the commitments made in the direction of alternate fuel sources is a long term enveavour. The thing is, that we should never underestimate the power of short term thinking.

  3. I bought an SUV over the summer. However, I am not as affected by gas prices, because I do get a decent car allowance. I would type more, but my keyboard is being very weird…
